Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei Dismisses Trump’s U.S. Nuclear Deal Proposal as ‘Nonsense’

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, publicly dismissed the latest U.S. proposal for a nuclear agreement, calling it “nonsense” and firmly rejecting any demand that Tehran abandon its uranium enrichment programme.

His remarks came amid ongoing tense negotiations between Iran and the United States aimed at resolving a decades-long dispute over Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

In a televised speech on Wednesday, Khamenei stated that the U.S. offer was “100 per cent against” Iran’s national interests and the core principles of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

He insisted that uranium enrichment is the “key” to Iran’s nuclear programme and energy independence, stating, “If we have 100 nuclear power plants but don’t have enrichment, they will be of no use to us.”

Khamenei criticised the U.S. as “rude and arrogant,” accusing American leaders of repeatedly demanding that Iran dismantle its nuclear programme.

“Who are you to decide whether Iran should have enrichment?” he asked, underscoring Tehran’s refusal to seek Washington’s approval for its sovereign decisions.

The Supreme Leader reiterated Iran’s stance that true independence means not waiting for a “green light from America or the likes of America.”

He framed the U.S. proposal as an attempt to undermine Iran’s self-sufficiency and its ‘We Can’ spirit, a slogan symbolising Iranian resilience and autonomy.

The U.S. had presented the proposal last Saturday after five rounds of negotiations mediated by Oman, with a sixth round potentially forthcoming. The plan reportedly allows Iran to maintain some level of uranium enrichment but demands restrictions on enrichment levels and stockpiles, which Tehran has rejected.

While Khamenei did not formally end the talks, his speech signalled a hardening of Iran’s position, particularly on the non-negotiable issue of uranium enrichment. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who has led the negotiations, indicated that Tehran would soon respond to the U.S. proposal.

Since the U.S. withdrawal from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018, Iran has expanded its nuclear programme, enriching uranium up to 60 per cent, close to weapons-grade levels, raising international concerns.

Khamenei’s remarks underscore the deep challenges ahead for any potential nuclear deal, as Iran insists on preserving its nuclear capabilities while the U.S. and its allies demand stringent limits and inspections.
