Botswana World Capital of Rape, Tops Global Charts; South Africa, India, Sweden Follow

Botswana has been identified as the country with the highest reported rape rate in the world in 2024, with approximately 92.93 incidents per 100,000 inhabitants, according to data from the World Population Review and official government sources.

The stats underscore the severe prevalence of sexual violence in the southern African nation, where gender-based violence remains a critical social challenge.

Historical data reveals a rising trend in reported rape cases in Botswana, with rates increasing from 86.1 per 100,000 population in 2011 to 91.6 in 2014.

Police records from 2019 show over 2,200 reported rapes, translating to roughly 96 cases per 100,000 people, consistent with the recent figures.

Despite government efforts, including the establishment of dedicated GBV courts and a sex offender registry, sexual violence remains widespread.

Studies indicate that a significant proportion of women in Botswana experience some form of abuse during their lifetime. The 2011 Gender Based Violence Indicator Study reported that nearly 70 per cent of women had faced emotional, physical, or sexual violence.

More recent reports suggest that around 37 per cent of women have experienced GBV, including sexual violence. The country’s failure to criminalize marital rape further complicates efforts to combat sexual violence and contributes to underreporting.

Botswana’s high rape rate places it ahead of other countries with serious sexual violence challenges.

Lesotho follows closely with a rate of 82.68 per 100,000. South Africa, which historically recorded one of the highest rates globally—132.4 per 100,000 in 2010—continues to struggle with sexual violence, although recent data suggests a slight decline.

A survey in South Africa found that one in four men admitted to committing rape, highlighting deep-rooted societal issues.

India reports over 31,000 rape cases annually, but its rate per 100,000 population is lower than Botswana’s.

The country faces persistent challenges with underreporting and low conviction rates. Sweden, with a rate of 63.54 per 100,000, is notable for its broad legal definition of rape and high reporting levels.

Comparing rape statistics across countries requires caution due to differences in legal definitions, cultural attitudes, reporting practices, and law enforcement effectiveness. For example, some countries do not criminalise marital rape, and others may count gang rape incidents differently, affecting reported rates.

The high incidence of rape in Botswana highlights the urgent need for comprehensive reforms. Activists and civil society groups call for stronger legal protections, enhanced victim support services, and public education campaigns to change societal attitudes toward sexual violence.

Botswana’s status as the country with the highest reported rape rate in 2024 serves as a stark reminder of the global challenge of combating sexual violence. It underscores the critical importance of coordinated efforts by governments, communities, and international organisations to protect survivors and prevent future abuse.
