The U.S. Department of State has reaffirmed its commitment to Taiwan. The American government said it would continue to support the country amid China’s military, economic, and diplomatic pressures and threats.
U.S. assurances followed China’s recent joint combat readiness patrols near the Taiwan Strait, a perennial concern about the region’s stability and peace.
The U.S. has made it clear that it opposes any attempts to change the status quo by force or coercion unilaterally and will work with international partners to maintain cross-strait peace and stability.
Additionally, the American government also pointedly noted that China cannot issue “brazen and irresponsible” threats toward Taiwan and still expect the international community to believe in China’s “self-proclaimed role as a stabilising force in a turbulent world.”
The United States has a long-standing commitment to Taiwan dating decades back. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently stated that the American government would not alter its position of opposing any unilateral, forced, or coercive change to Taiwan’s status.
This commitment has been reaffirmed in response to China’s comments on the 20th anniversary of its so-called ‘Anti-secession Law’.
The U.S. has berated China’s intimidation campaign against Taiwan and its supporters, which “has gone global and threatens free speech, destabilises the Indo-Pacific region, and erodes norms that have underpinned the cross-strait status quo for decades.”
China’s actions, including the issuance of 22 judicial guidelines to impose criminal punishments on “diehard Taiwan independence separatists”, have been particularly provocative, according to Taipei.
Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lin Chia-lung, thanked the U.S. for its commitment, stating that Taiwan will continue to work with the US to safeguard peace, stability, and prosperity across the Taiwan Strait and the region.
Taiwan has also urged nations worldwide to demonstrate collective concern over China’s military threats and unilateral actions.
According to MOFA, the U.S. has made it clear that it will maintain its ability to deter aggression and resist any use of force or other forms of coercion to protect the Taiwanese people from intimidation and harm.
With upheavals across the globe amid armed conflict and political revolutions, the international community will be watching closely to see how events unfold.
