Natural Eco Capital Joins UNFCCC Executive Secretary’s Maiden Mission to Nigeria: A Celebration of Climate, Mangroves, Art

Natural Eco Capital played an important part in the key activities arranged for Simon Stiell, the executive secretary of the UNFCCC, during his maiden mission visit to Nigeria.

One of the defining moments of this visit was the Inaugural Session of the Intersecting Worlds of Climate Change, Mangroves, and Art—a powerful gathering held at the Nigeria Conservation Foundation’s Rotunda, Lekki Conservation Centre, on March 6, 2025.

The symposium and breakfast meeting, hosted by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) in collaboration with the National Council on Climate Change Secretariat (NCCCS), provided a unique platform to explore the role of the creative industry in promoting climate literacy, awareness, and behavioural change Nigeria’s potential in nature-based climate solutions as a driver of climate resilience Engaging stakeholders on NDC 3.0 and the private sector’s role in implementing climate commitments.

On the symposium, Dr. Eugene Itua, CEO of Natural Eco Capital, shared his reflections, describing the event as “an inspiring convergence of science, nature, and creativity.”

He emphasised the critical role of mangroves—not just as ecological powerhouses but as cultural symbols of resilience in the face of climate change.

By uniting scientists, policymakers, and artists, the session reinforced the urgency of innovative, interdisciplinary approaches to climate action—where science meets storytelling and policy is enriched by artistic expression.

“This is just the beginning. We must build on this momentum by fostering deeper collaborations between environmental scientists, local communities, and creative voices,” said Itua.

The Natural Eco Capital boss added, “The next steps should include developing policy frameworks that integrate artistic advocacy into climate resilience strategies, expanding community-driven mangrove restoration initiatives, and leveraging the power of storytelling to drive behavioural change.

“The intersection of climate, biodiversity, and culture offers a unique opportunity to reshape the narrative around environmental conservation—and we must seize it.”

This event also reaffirmed the strong partnership between Natural Eco Capital and the Nigerian Conservation Foundation.

On August 21, 2024, both organisations signed an MoU for joint programme implementation, knowledge and skills sharing, and mutual support towards advancing nature-based solutions, sustainability strategies, climate change mitigation, and emerging environmental issues at the Lekki Conservation Centre.

“As we reflect on this milestone, Natural Eco Capital remains committed to working with partners across sectors to drive impactful, nature-based climate solutions, elevate creative voices in climate action, and support Nigeria’s ambitious climate commitments,” said a recent statement by the organisation.
