Stopping TikTok Ban President Trump’s Way After Supreme Court’s Verdict ‘Forcing’ Social Media App to Go Dark on January 19

Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, the clock chimes fast and furious away as the strident death knell of video-sharing social media app TikTok rang out following the U.S. Supreme Court’s verdict affirming the app’s ban in the United States.

TikTok sighed on Saturday that unless the outgoing President Joe Biden administration “immediately provides a definitive statement to satisfy the most critical service providers assuring non-enforcement.

“Unfortunately,” said the social media company, “TikTok will be forced to go dark on January 19.”

Tomorrow, Sunday, January 19, 2025, the curtains are expected to come down on TikTok in the U.S., plunging 170 million users into virtual video-sharing darkness.

What can Donald Trump do upon assumption of power?

The incoming national security adviser, Mike Waltz, said, “We will implement measures to ensure TikTok remains operational. The law permits a 90-day extension if there is substantial progress toward a sale.

“This essentially provides President Trump with the opportunity to keep TikTok active while safeguarding users’ data.”

Trump’s attorney general nominee, Pam Bondi, stated, “The administration is exploring options to keep TikTok accessible to users past Sunday, aiming to create space for a deal or resolution that aligns with national security concerns.”

TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew said, “We are open to working with the U.S. government to address any concerns and ensure that TikTok remains available to its 170 million American users. A temporary reprieve would allow us to finalise ongoing discussions regarding ownership and compliance.”

What does Trump think?

“I think that would be, certainly, an option that we look at. The 90-day extension is something that will be most likely done because it’s appropriate. We have to look at it carefully,” Trump, the U.S. president-in-waiting, said.

“It’s a very big situation,” Trump stressed.
