President-elect Donald Trump is set to face sentencing on January 10, 2025, after being found guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in a New York case. This development comes after New York Judge Juan Merchan declined to dismiss the indictment or guilty verdict against Trump.
Trump’s sentencing is scheduled to take place just 10 days before his inauguration as President of the United States. In a recent filing, Merchan noted that he is inclined not to impose a sentence of incarceration. However, if a sentence cannot be given before Trump takes office, the judge suggested that proceedings may need to be postponed until after Trump’s presidential term is over.
The guilty verdict against Trump was delivered in May, officially labelling him a convicted felon. This decision was followed by Merchan’s ruling last month that Trump is not immune from conviction in the case.
The case revolves around Trump’s alleged falsification of business records to conceal a $130,000 hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels, which was made to influence the 2016 presidential election. Trump’s legal team will appeal the conviction.
